St Mary`s church is the only grade 1 listed building in Calne and has stood at the centre of the community for nearly a thousand years, providing not only a place of prayer and worship, but also a place where a wide range of community events happen.



Now Open Every Day!

One of our first goals when we started discussing Project 2026 was to open the church to the public every day. We have now done that and are loving the fact that people visit every day!

The church is available for you to visit from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily.

Whether you want a place for a history lesson (there is so much here!), quiet contemplation, prayers, light a candle for a lost one or just to cool off, you are welcome to come inside. On Wednesday and Friday afternoons we have docents available to show you around and discuss some of the finer features of the church.

Our Aim

Project 2026 provides the opportunity to extend the use of the church further, allowing Fully accessible spaces so everyone will be able to access and use the building. This will allow for many more social events, such as more concerts, recitals etc, to take place. 

Phase One of the project will provide 2 toilets, a kitchen with enhanced facilities and improved main access with an inner glass lobby and doors – allowing persons of all abilities to enter the building easily.

The second phase of the project when funds permit, will include the creation of an exhibition space, a raised dais and performance area as well as some vital repairs to the fabric of the building.

Finally, a Community Engagement Officer will be hired whose task will be to share the history connected to the building by engaging with schools, other community groups, and the world in exciting and innovative ways.

The Cost

The overall costs exceed £650,000 with the cost of phase one in excess of £418,000. Over £62,000 has already been donated by our church congregation, a further £18,000 has been raised through community events, and access to some church trust funds will provide a further £150,000. In addition we are in the process of applying for a variety of grants. We are very confident that, with the help of the community, we will reach the total which will provide a community facility fit for generations to come.
